Perur Patteeswaraswamy Temple

Perur Patteeswaraswamy temple built by Karikala Cholan is located 7 km west of Coimbatore near Noyyal river. Coimbatore has many temples out of which the Perur Patteeshwara Swamy temple is the most popular one. The temple upholds huge statues. The significance of Perur temple in earlier days is unfolded in the poetic creations of Arunagiri Nather and Kachiappa Munivar.

Lord Shiva is the presiding deity of this temple who is known as ‘Patteeswarar’ and his consort Parvati is known as ‘Panchanayaki’. The idol in the temple is believed to be ‘Swayambu Lingam’ (self emerged).

This temple was built by Karikala Cholan and later many other rulers also added to this temple's brilliant and exemplary architecture as we would like describe in terms of todays construction. Huge Pillars which forms the standards of those days. This temple was even attacked by Aurangazeb and seemed to have left the temple unscathed which is rather very unusual for his kind of nature like in other places. In respect of his attitude he had displayed there is a statue in front of the temple which depicts a soldier wearing a dress similar to Aurangazeb Soldier.

Another very notable fact is that there are about 100 muslims everyday who come to the temple lighting lamps as part of their faith. This depicts a very different but unique way of unity in diversity and also communal harmony at its very best.

This temple also has a very strong faith that anyone who visits the temple is supposed not have a re-birth. This however maybe difficult to digest initially, but fact of the matter is that there is a tamarind tree normally average lifetime is believed to be between 80 to 200 years , but this tree has been there for a very long time and also bears flowers and fruits like a normal tree but if we take a seed and plant it elsewhere it does not grow at all just goes to prove the point that there is no re-birth again which in all likelihood maybe a point of debate for all those who are agnostic or atheist but not for theist.

There is a special festive activity in Pungani Uthiram with a lot of fervour and faith.
