Use of Technology in Cricket
In the last decade or so, the game called cricket has become more and more competitive, the use of technology in the game has been on the anvil and finally the stage has been set for it take the center stage. Today’s debate will largely be centered on the extent of the usage of the technology in the sport.
If you are keen watcher of this sport, would have taken cognizance of the fact that, the usage of the technology has been to some extent. During the length of time we could a larger chunk of the decisions using the technology for the betterment of the sport. In the present times, it is being used for run-out,stumping or an inconclusive catch. This gets referred to the third umpire for the judgment of the decision which is translated through the giant screens in the major cricketing grounds.
This has actually led to fear-feeling in the minds of the stand-in umpires who have come from the era of no-technology times to the present times. They feel that by using the technology will mean that they are not capable of making their decision with the naked eyes and during course of time will become redundant to the game of cricket.
But the fact is that ICC came up with this idea of technology-use to be of assistance to the best of umpires to add value to their umpiring not the other way around. Also that it will help in the any human error which can creep into the game – that is detrimental to the sport.
We see that the human tendency for the resistance to the using of the technology, which is actually the fear of losing the importance in the sport. Again what we fail to understand is that the sport is larger than men who play and men are just of the part of the sport.
It would be absolute sense for the umpires in the game to this understanding etched in their minds that error of any kind in the game could simply change the course of the match. The technology is made available to the stand-in umpires, it would be wiser to use to make the right decision rather than make a quixotic attempt in decision making when unsure.
As an ardent follower of the sport, I feel that if in the course of the future, the umpires still continue in the manner they are performing at the present level, ICC should come up with some mechanism for the override of the decision given by the stand-in umpires through the giant screens in the major cricketing grounds or through the walkie-talkie in other places as case maybe. This is only going to help the sport to move greater heights from the existing platform.
It is always sad to notice that the apprehensive mindset that the technology is here to take over the control from the stand-in umpires ,but it is only a tool for the enhancement of the sport.
