Here the flavour is pure Arabic
Al-Reef on East Coast Road in Kottivakkam has in a short time begun to attract large crowds, especially of people who have returned from a stint in the Middle East and have had exposure to the region’s exclusive cuisine. They know that if you are looking for Arabic food this is a cosy place to hang out with friends.
The hotel opened on Feb 27 and is part of a chain, with nearly a dozen operating in the metro under different names. It plans three more outlets on ECR and Old Mahabalipuram Road. It has been operating in Bahrain and Dubai for quite some time.
The two partners managing Al-Reef can be mistaken for being part of the gen next that has begun to frequent the hotel. Both are young and energetic and have had exposure in Dubai and Bahrain from where have come quite a few of the delicacies and preparations on offer at Al-Reef.
For one partner it is a quantum jump: his father has for the past 30 years and more run a vegetarian restaurant – Adyar Sree Bhavan in Sashtri Nagar. In terms of business and development, the happening area of the East Coast Road is a natural choice.
As with other eating houses, the restaurant sees its busiest activity during the weekend beginning Friday evening. As the evening wears out and it is house-full inside, customers have the choice of eating out. With the predominantly blue-green interior lighting and the glass cover, you can fancy yourself sitting in a night club.
Al-reef specialises in Arabic dishes as well as fruit cocktails from the Middle East. The speciality dish is Arabic Chicken Shawarma , grilled chicken and barbecue dishes. If shawarma is an exclusive dish from the Middle East, the side dish that goes with it is even more authentic Arabic, though in terms of the spicy ingredients it has a very Indian flavour. They are also offering green olives and Tahini (sesame sauce) along with main course, Hummus (food appetizer) along with the Arabic bread (kubbos).
Mr Mohammed Shawad, one of the partners, said they had arranged to fly in many of the ingredients of the Arabic dishes so that they remain authentic in taste and flavour.
“We now offer home delivery for orders above Rs.100 and within a radius of 5 km.”
Al-reef plans to offer dial-an-order service shortly. Apart from the Arabic dishes it has Indian, Chinese and tandoori.
